Led by Professor Josh Byrne AM, Dean Sustainable Futures, Humanities, alongside Unit Coordinator Aimee Smith and Futures Challenge Coordinator Tim Keely, the Sustainability Challenge is an intensive, credit-bearing unit that brings students together from across Curtin鈥檚 faculties to work in interdisciplinary teams.

Across the week, students responded to live industry challenges connected to climate change, resource use, sustainable communities, ecosystems, the built environment and the future of cities. The program challenged students to move beyond classroom theory and apply their learning to complex issues being faced by organisations, communities and industry.

Now in its fifth year, the challenge has continued to grow in both scale and impact. Since 2022, more than 600 students and over 30 industry partners have taken part, working together on problems that are not simulated or theoretical, but connected to real organisations, communities and systems.

Professor Richard Blythe, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Humanities, described the program as one of the clearest examples of challenge-based learning at work.

鈥淲hat happened here in the space of a single, intensive week is closer to the real thing than almost anything else the university offers,鈥 Professor Blythe said.

He reflected on the importance of students learning to work across disciplines, noting that real sustainability challenges rarely fit neatly within one field of study.

鈥淭he problems you worked on don鈥檛 care what faculty you come from,鈥 he said. 鈥淲A doesn鈥檛 need just an architect. It needs someone who can think across disciplines, hold uncertainty and still move towards a decision.鈥

This year鈥檚 cohort was one of the largest in the program鈥檚 history, with around 150 students taking part. Over the course of the challenge, students heard from Government Briefing Partners, worked closely with Industry Challenge Partners, and received guidance from Academic Mentors and Expert Partners as they tested their assumptions, refined their ideas and prepared for their final presentations.

For Professor Blythe, one of the most valuable parts of the program was not only the final proposal, but the process students experienced along the way.

鈥淪ustainability challenges are complex. They require collaboration, creativity and the ability to work across disciplines,鈥 he said. 鈥淟earning to sit with that productive difficulty and keep working anyway is one of the most important things a university education can give you.鈥

The student experience was also central to the showcase, with Master of Commerce student representative Ngoc Kim Ngan Ho sharing how the challenge shifted her understanding of what practical learning could look like.

Initially joining the unit for credit, Ngoc said she quickly realised the challenge was far more than a classroom exercise.

鈥淚 was really surprised,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t was actually a real consulting project, with real clients, real industry partners and real issues they were facing.鈥

Working in an interdisciplinary team gave her new insight into how different fields approach the same problem. As a commerce student aspiring to become a consultant, she reflected on the value of listening to engineering, design and other discipline perspectives before making commercial judgments.

鈥淚t is not easy to come up with a solution that actually works in real life,鈥 she shared. 鈥淚n the future, if I work in consulting, I will listen to engineering and other perspectives before I say something is too expensive.鈥

Her experience also highlighted one of the broader aims of the Sustainability Challenge: to help students build the communication, feedback and collaboration skills they will need beyond university.

The showcase also featured perspectives from industry partners, including Georgia Drieu, Sustainability Engagement Officer at the City of Melville, who worked with students on a challenge related to tracking the City鈥檚 Scope 3 emissions data.

Georgia explained that the City of Melville entered the challenge seeking fresh ideas on how to collect supplier-specific activity data which is something many organisations are grappling with.

鈥淲e were looking for fresh perspectives and ideas,鈥 she said. 鈥淎ccurate Scope 3 data collection is an emerging area of work within climate action, and there is no straight forward solution as of yet.鈥

The students鈥 work left a strong impression.

鈥淥ur challenge teams did not disappoint,鈥 Georgia shared. 鈥淲e have been completely overwhelmed by the carbon literacy, maturity, passion and determination of the students.鈥

She also noted the way students used technology, worked across disciplines and engaged deeply with an area of sustainability that many had not previously encountered.

鈥淲orking in sustainability and climate action can sometimes be really frustrating, and you can feel like you are not making that much progress,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e were genuinely inspired and empowered by the level of engagement we received from all the students.鈥

For Georgia, the value of the challenge extended beyond the proposals themselves. It offered reassurance about the next generation of professionals entering industry.

鈥淣ot only are your proposed solutions absolutely fantastic, but we feel so much better knowing that the next generation champions sustainability in all that they do,鈥 she said.

The program was made possible through the contribution of a broad network of partners, mentors and Curtin staff. Challenge Partners Georgia Drieu and Jane Loveday (City of Melville), John Clifton (DevelopmentWA), Mark Taylor (Hesperia), Tammy Chong (Curtin Properties, Facilities and Development), Danicia Quinlan (ASPECT Studios), and Mitchell Hardy, Emily Greenhalgh, Nick Schols and Zoe Beeson (Perth Zoo) worked closely with students to provide industry context, practical insight and feedback.

Government Briefing Partners from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, Ro Richardson, Amanda Joseph and Nicole Zago helped frame the challenges students would explore, while Expert Partners Angelina Bowden-Jones, Sarah Booth, David Beyer, Mandy Bamford, Graham Agar and Marcus Geisler shared specialist knowledge to support students as they strengthened their proposals.

Academic Mentors Arlen Brower, Roberto Minunno, Joanne Castelli, Robyn Ouschan, Holly Kirk, John Martin, Andreas Pfeifle and Atiq Zaman also played an important role throughout the week, guiding students as they developed their thinking, tested assumptions and prepared their final work.

Professor Byrne acknowledged the significant work behind the scenes, including the teaching team, Digital Learning and Innovation, DBE Makerspace, Curtin Events and the professional staff who helped bring the challenge and showcase to life.

He also thanked the industry partners who trusted students with real problems and real expectations.

鈥淭his year鈥檚 partners have generously shared their time and their expertise,鈥 Professor Byrne said. 鈥淧lease know just how much this contribution is valued.鈥

In closing the formalities, Professor Byrne reflected on the power of positive collaboration and the importance of students working respectfully and purposefully together.

鈥淭here is no hiding the fact that we face plenty of challenges now, and many more ahead,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut we are better off facing them together with common purpose.鈥

This year鈥檚 showcase also introduced a new element, the People鈥檚 Prize, in recognition of the fifth running of the Sustainability Challenge at Curtin鈥檚 Bentley campus. Guests were invited to vote for the student team whose idea resonated most, whether through the strength of their pitch, the quality of their work or the passion behind their proposal.

While the prize added excitement to the evening, Professor Byrne reminded students and guests that the heart of the challenge remained collaboration.

As students presented their final work to guests, external partners and the wider Curtin community, the Sustainability Challenge 2026 showcased what can happen when students are trusted with real problems and supported to think beyond disciplinary boundaries.

More than a final presentation, the showcase reflected five years of growing momentum for a program grounded in practical learning, strong partnerships and a shared commitment to building more sustainable futures.

Over the course of the week, students engaged in deep exploration of sustainability, cultural context, design thinking and multimedia storytelling as they worked towards innovative responses to this year鈥檚 global brief.

Immersive Learning Across Dubai and Abu Dhabi

From the very first day, students were encouraged to think critically and creatively about people, place and sustainability on a global scale. Their learning extended far beyond the studio, with field visits and cultural experiences that shaped their understanding of the region鈥檚 social, environmental and historical landscape.

Students explored key cultural and environmental sites including:

  • Dubai Design District (d3)
  • Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi
  • Burj Khalifa
  • Dubai Creek and historic precincts

These experiences enabled students to draw inspiration from diverse cultural narratives, architectural innovation, and the environmental challenges and opportunities unique to the region. Through guided tours, site analysis, and multimedia documentation, students connected ideas, captured insights and expanded their perspective on sustainability in rapidly evolving global contexts.

Collaboration With Expert Partners

A core component of the Challenge involved spending time with industry and community partners who provided firsthand insight into ecological systems, sustainable development and social innovation across the UAE. Students participated in open discussions and guided environmental tours, building a stronger understanding of regional sustainability priorities and their implications for design and policy.

This direct engagement gave students both the knowledge and inspiration needed to develop informed, meaningful and future-focused responses to the Challenge brief.

Bringing It All Together: Final Studio Day & Pitch Night

After six days of cultural immersion, research, prototyping and reflection, students entered their final studio session, a day dedicated to refining, validating and elevating their design solutions.

Teams worked collaboratively to:

  • Critically review their concepts against stakeholder needs
  • Strengthen logic, structure and storytelling
  • Validate facts, data and research
  • Integrate cultural and environmental insights
  • Finalise their visual and multimedia outputs

Working lunches, peer-to-peer critique sessions and last-round revisions filled the day as teams prepared for their final showcase. That evening, students took the stage for Pitch Night, presenting their completed concepts to peers, facilitators, and invited industry guests. Each presentation demonstrated not only creative thinking but also a deep appreciation for sustainability, cultural context and design rigour. Their work reflected courage, curiosity and a strong commitment to shaping more sustainable futures.

Leadership and Support

Beginning on 6 November 2025, the Challenge was led by an experienced team from Curtin Bentley鈥檚 Faculty of Humanities including Professor Josh Byrne, Professor Francesco Mancini, Melissa Greenberg, Stephanie Lee, Bayley Simonds and Arlen Brower (Science and Engineering), as well as academics from Curtin Dubai, including Ajita Nayar, Professor Pon Selvan and Professor Anitha Menon.  

Their guidance ensured that students were supported at every stage, from initial ideation through to final delivery.

Looking Ahead

The Global Sustainability Challenge continues to demonstrate the power of global collaboration, experiential learning and interdisciplinary thinking. We are incredibly proud of our students for their energy, resilience and creativity throughout this year鈥檚 Challenge.

Held from 13 – 30 October 2025 in Fremantle WA and 红桃视频 Bentley Campus, the challenge brought together students from , 红桃视频 Academics, Fremantle community champions, and the City of Fremantle to tackle a live community sustainability brief; William Street 鈥楻eimagined鈥. 

Participants worked collaboratively to explore innovative ways to enhance sustainability, livability, and community connection through urban greening within the heart of Fremantle. The challenge provided students with hands-on experience in community-led urban design, sustainability innovation, and collaborative problem-solving, bridging academic learning with real-world application. 

鈥淭hrough masterclasses with Curtin academics and mentorship from industry leaders, our students have gained practical skills, fresh perspectives and a glimpse into future pathways in sustainability.鈥 鈥 The Studio School Fremantle 

The 2025 challenge once again demonstrated the value of connecting education, industry, local government, and community to drive positive change and reaffirmed the vital role of young changemakers in shaping a sustainable future.

Professor Josh Byrne is an environmental scientist, urban design professional and Dean of Sustainable Futures at Curtin. His career bridges academia, professional practice, media and policy, with a focus on advancing urban sustainability through demonstration and collaboration. In 2025, Josh was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to conservation, the environment and public communication.

Saf describes her career path as 鈥渧ery twisty.鈥 With more than 15 years of experience as an electrician in the electrical and energy sectors, she鈥檚 now studying a Bachelor of Science (Data Science) at Curtin. Over five intensive days, 120 students from across disciplines鈥攅ngineering, design, construction management, health sciences, communications, business, and more鈥攃ollaborated with leading industry experts and academic mentors to develop tangible solutions for a more sustainable future. This year鈥檚 challenge centred on three key themes: Climate mitigation, adaptation and resilience; Resource efficiency and circularity; and Ecosystem health and wellbeing.

鈥淭hese aren鈥檛 just theoretical global problems,鈥 said Provost Professor Matthew Tonts. 鈥淭hey have very real implications for Western Australia. And they require collaboration across all fields鈥攈umanities, science, engineering, law, business. This challenge gives our students a rare opportunity to experience that kind of interdisciplinary negotiation, complexity, and creativity.鈥

What set this year apart was the breadth of real-world partnerships. Students engaged with representatives from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, DevelopmentWA, and Austal, along with a powerhouse group of industry leader and researchers.

Projects tackled ranged from decarbonising ferry transportation and greening urban neighbourhoods to low carbon medium density housing and nature based solutions for combating urban heat.

鈥淭his isn鈥檛 just about giving students a brief and walking away,鈥 said Professor Josh Byrne, Dean of Sustainable Futures. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about industry and academia coming together to guide and nurture student thinking鈥攁nd that鈥檚 what we saw in full force this week. The creativity and intellect in the room has been formidable.鈥

Reflecting on the experience, student representative Habiba Rashid shared:

鈥淭his wasn鈥檛 just an academic exercise. It was a deeply personal opportunity to explore different ways of thinking, build skills, and collaborate with students from all walks of life. We鈥檝e seen that even in one week, it鈥檚 possible to plant the seeds of real, lasting change.鈥

For many students, this was the first time they had worked in a multidisciplinary team or been exposed to genuine industry problems. As Associate Professor Nicole Slatter, Dean of Learning and Teaching, explained.

鈥淭his platform brings together brilliant researchers, strong pedagogical approaches, and meaningful partnerships to prepare students not just for a job鈥攂ut for the future. A future that is shared, complex, and constantly evolving.鈥

Behind the scenes, academic and professional staff played a vital role in making the challenge possible. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great example of what happens when the full skills of our university community are leveraged for the benefit of students and society,鈥 said Byrne. 鈥淭o every staff member who guided, mentored, and supported our students鈥攖hank you.鈥

The 2025 Sustainability Challenge not only showcased inspiring student work鈥攊t offered a blueprint for how universities, government and industry can collaborate to tackle the defining challenges of our time.

As one industry mentor put it:

鈥淭hese students didn鈥檛 just meet expectations鈥攖hey redefined what鈥檚 possible when you put real problems in front of bright minds and trust them to lead.鈥 The challenge may have ended, but the solutions鈥攁nd the relationships built鈥攚ill continue shaping the future long after the showcase lights dim.

Held at Curtin Singapore, the event was a collaborative effort to advance innovative solutions for a more sustainable future.

The GSC鈥檚 outstanding success was recognised with the Global Impact Award at the Global Curtin Recognition Awards 2024. This prestigious accolade celebrates the challenge鈥檚 exceptional contributions to extending 红桃视频鈥檚 impact and influence across borders, underscoring its role as a global leader in sustainability education and collaboration.

A Global Community of Changemakers

The GSC united students from diverse cultural and academic backgrounds, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to tackle real-world issues. Working in teams, participants focused on sustainability challenges faced by the island of Pulau Ubin in Singapore, such as waste management, energy security, and nature conservation.

鈥淭his was much more than just an assignment 鈥 it was an opportunity to shape the future. Students developed innovative solutions that addressed practical concerns, like reducing transport emissions and improving local energy resilience. Their ideas were both inspiring and actionable.鈥

Innovative Solutions for Real-World Challenges

Participants collaborated with leading industry partners, including Singapore National Parks Board, Asian Detours, EDP Renewables, and VFlowTech, to co-design solutions aimed at achieving net-zero emissions, promoting a circular economy, and fostering nature-positive practices.

Highlights from the challenge included:

  • Resource Recovery Innovations: Practical strategies for waste avoidance and recycling to reduce transport costs and emissions.
  • Renewable Energy Optimisation: Tools to enable villagers to monitor and maximise local micro-grid power.
  • Electric Transport Solutions: Proposals to transition to electric ferries that could double as emergency energy storage.

These solutions demonstrated not only creativity but also a strong commitment to making a tangible impact on pressing global issues.

Hands-On Learning and Mentorship

Unlike traditional competitions, the GSC prioritised teamwork and cross-cultural collaboration, supported by mentorship from industry experts. Students developed leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills while building a global network of peers dedicated to sustainability.

鈥淭he Global Sustainability Challenge was an incredible opportunity for Curtin students to apply their knowledge to global challenges, working towards sustainable solutions with real-world implications,鈥 Professor Byrne said.

A Showcase of Innovation

The challenge concluded on 17 November 2024 with students presenting their innovative solutions to key stakeholders in Singapore. This inspiring showcase reflected the participants鈥 creativity, teamwork, and shared vision for a sustainable future.

As members of the UN Council of Engineers for the Energy Transition (UN CEET), they contributed technical expertise to support global efforts to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

Driving Energy Efficiency in the Global South

A/Prof Atiq Zaman collaborated with UN CEET colleagues and his PhD student, Ms Ayesha Kaleem, on the report Energy Rating Labels and Potential for Energy Savings Across the Global South. The study highlights potential energy savings scenarios of 10% to 40% by 2050, underscoring the importance of adopting Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) and Energy Rating Labels (ERLs). These findings provide a framework for countries in the Global South to incorporate energy efficiency measures into their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) by 2025.

A/Prof Zaman also shared his expertise during an interview at the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Pavilion, discussing the critical role of energy efficiency in tackling the climate crisis.

Innovative Waste-to-Energy Solutions

Dr Alessandro Sanches Pereira, with his UN CEET colleagues, presented the report Unlocking Low-Emission Energy from Waste: A Sustainable Solution for Shipping and Fisheries in Emerging Economies at the Danish Pavilion. This work highlights the potential of waste-to-energy systems to provide low-emission alternatives for industries in emerging economies, supporting sustainable development.

Changemakers for Sustainability Challenge 2024 /about/futures-platform/changemakers-for-sustainability-2024/ Thu, 07 Nov 2024 00:51:31 +0000 /about/?post_type=futures-platform&p=25959 红桃视频 recently concluded the Changemakers for Sustainability Challenge, a dynamic three-day event held from 1st to 3rd October 2024 at the Bentley Campus, aimed at equipping Year 10-12 students with the skills and knowledge to tackle real-world sustainability challenges. Students from across Perth came together to learn, collaborate, and take their first steps towards creating a sustainable future.

The event featured a range of activities designed to inspire and empower participants. Students engaged in interactive masterclasses led by Curtin academics, where they gained a deeper understanding of sustainability issues and explored innovative solutions. The mentorship from industry leaders provided a valuable perspective on the sustainability practices shaping today鈥檚 world, giving students insight into potential career paths.

In addition to academic and industry-led sessions, students had the chance to immerse themselves in university life, experiencing Curtin鈥檚 vibrant campus and connecting with like-minded peers. This exposure to campus life sparked new ambitions and ideas, encouraging students to envision futures where they could drive positive environmental change.

By the event鈥檚 close, students had not only gained practical skills and knowledge but had also formed meaningful connections with peers and mentors. The Changemakers for Sustainability Challenge proved to be an inspiring journey for all involved, setting the stage for the next generation of environmental leaders.

红桃视频 proudly hosted the 2024 Sustainability Challenge, where students teamed up with academics and industry professionals to create innovative solutions to pressing environmental issues.  

The Sustainability Challenge is an industry-partnered, intensive unit enhancing learning opportunities through challenge-based learning experiences.

Entering its third year, the Sustainability Challenge fosters collaboration and practical problem-solving across three critical themes: Net-Zero Emissions, Circular Economy, and Nature Positive. The 2024 Sustainability Challenge ran from June 24 to July 1 in the Curtin School of Design and the Built Environment, with participating students earning 25 credit points towards their undergraduate or postgraduate degrees.

Professor Josh Byrne, Dean of Sustainable Futures in the Faculty of Humanities at 红桃视频, highlighted the significance of this event, emphasising the hands-on experience it offers students and its role in promoting sustainable futures.

鈥淭he Sustainability Challenge connected nearly 100 students with academic mentors and industry experts to develop solutions for positive environmental change,鈥 Professor Byrne said.

This year, participants tackled a variety of sustainability concerns, including:

  • Shifting transport behaviours.
  • Facilitating increased renewable energy integration into the grid.
  • Waste avoidance and reducing contamination in FOGO (food organics and garden organics) waste streams.
  • Increasing urban tree canopy by addressing the pest polyphagous shot-hole borer and promoting better urban forestry practices.

Among the innovative ideas presented by student groups were an app that tracks carbon emission reduction and encourages the use of public transport and shared scooters, and a video game designed to educate consumers on proper waste sorting. Other teams developed plans to expand urban forests in challenging environments and devised strategies to improve energy reliability and boost renewable energy generation in regional towns.

A cohort of international students from the Eurasia University School of Art and Design (EAaD) also travelled from the Xi鈥檃n province of China to join this year鈥檚 Sustainability Challenge. This innovative collaboration was initiated by Dr Anne Farren from the Curtin School of Design and the Built Environment. The Sustainability Challenge served as a collaborative platform for both institutions to enhance their global engagement.
