This course embraces research-informed innovation. It will give you the knowledge to be an evidence-based innovator, as well as the leadship skills that modern organisations need to deliver innovation. It also integrates our 'GRIT' concepts: global, responsible, innovative, technology – skills that the World Economic Forum has identified as non‑negotiable for the 21st century.
Overall, our Bachelor of Innovation is designed for people who are interested in designing and implementing evidence-based innovation – either in an existing company or in their own enterprise.
Throughout the course, you will develop strong business know-how and the ability to identify, create and implement ideas for new products, services, processes and business models. You'll learn how to innovate ethically, engage globally, and use technology decisively to deliver solutions with positive social and industry impacts.
You’ll study our business core units and gain a strong foundation in business. You'll then build on this with our suite of innovation fundamentals units. You can then choose to apply your knowledge, creative thinking and innovation strategies to a business major; or diversify your skills with two specialisations from business, arts, design, science and Indigenous studies.Ìý
Throughout the course, you’ll have opportunities to build your expertise through four transformative experiences. These immersive, real-world experiences will challenge you to solve local, regional and global problems using your innovation skill sets.
You'll also have the opportunity to join the Curtin Ignition and Curtin Accelerate entrepreneurship programs, and access executive education masterclasses to help you set up your own enterprise.
After completing this course, you'll graduate with the skills to:
- analyse global opportunities and risks to provide informed strategic advice
- use economic, social and environmental research insights to navigate complex challenges and drive positive organisational and societal change.

Business core units
With these business core units you'll gain a solid foundation in business theory and practice:
- Communication, Culture and Indigenous Perspectives in Business

Innovation fundamental units
This suite of units will give you a fundamental understanding of key innovation principles and strategies.
Compulsory units
You will complete these five core units:
Introduction to Innovation Principles: This unit explores the underlying principles and contexts of innovation; types and approaches to innovation; and the technological capabilities and mindset of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
Management of Innovation: This unit explores how innovation drives the creation of competitive advantage, and how a firm's innovation strategy emerges from its competencies and capabilities.
Project Management: You’ll learn about the management of information and tasks that ensure successful project delivery, including project scope and the management of time, cost, quality, risk, human resources, communication and procurement.
Responsible Innovation and Leadership: In this unit, you'll develop a deep understanding of what responsible leadership and innovation mean to you.
Design Foundations: In this unit, you'll learn about the processes of design thinking and approaches to solving problems.
Choice of fundamental units
You'll choose two additional units to study, one from each group below:
Group 1: Entrepreneurship OR International Management
- Entrepreneurship: In this unit, you'll explore the research, theory and practice of entrepreneurship. You'll learn about the characteristics and challenges of entrepreneurship and growing a new business.
- International Management: This unit focuses on international management theory and practice, as well as the challenges and adaptation required in cross-cultural or cross-national managerial interfaces.
Group 2: Design ComputingÌýOR Introduction to Business ProgrammingÌýOR 3D Design Practice
- Design Computing: In this unit, you’ll learn about various industry-standard design technologies, and complete practical design projects.
- Introduction to Business Programming: This unit focuses on programming language, computing environments and system software used to solve business challenges.
- 3D Design Practice: This unit introduces the knowledge and skills required for 3D digital modelling and prototyping. You will use parametric solid modelling software to develop designs as forms, scale drawings and images, and apply 3D modelling techniques to produce them.
Transformative experiences
Put your skills into practice through four real-world experience units, designed to actively ‘transform' your learning at pivotal moments throughout your degree.1
First, complete these units:
- Business Innovation Lab: In the Business Innovation Lab, you will apply the knowledge and skills gained in your studies to your own business startup. You'll collaborate in a team of likeminded innovators to develop a detailed business proposal that is ethical, viable and scalable – providing important experiences for your future career.
- Sustainable Business Innovation Project: In this unit, you'll apply your expertise to an industry-connected innovation project related to sustainable development and social impact. Working in a collaborative team, you’ll seek solutions that benefit the environment, society and the economy.
Next, choose two of these units:
You may select up to two of the four available capstone experience units.
- Business Clinic: This is your chance to become a real-world business consultant, working directly with individuals, small organisations and startups to solve challenges and optimise for opportunities. Through hands-on experience in the clinic, you will develop your understanding of key business concepts, problem-solving techniques and ethical decision-making. You’ll gain valuable insights into the modern business world and the confidence to navigate its complexities once you graduate.
- Business Internship: You’ve understood the theory, read the academic papers and pored through the textbooks – now it’s time to apply what you’ve learned to real business situations through a professional internship. Guided by an academic advisor and an industry professional, you’ll be immersed in the day-to-day operations of your host organisation. This capstone experience is a chance to develop your business skills, enhance your career readiness, build your professional network and nurture your personal and professional growth.
- Business and Law International Experience: We’re a global university with campuses and connections around the world – why not make the most of it! Through this capstone experience, you can progress your studies while travelling by studying a short course with one of our global exchange partners. You’ll immerse yourself in a different culture, expand your knowledge, make lifelong memories and build your global perspective.
- Business Study Tour or International Business Project: Ready for an adventure? Through this capstone experience, you’ll apply what you’ve learnt in real-world settings around the globe. Through site visits, guest lectures and team projects, you'll connect with industry leaders, gain fresh perspectives and tackle real business challenges – all with the guidance of our academic staff. Local or international, every tour blends cultural activities with practical learning – developing your leadership, problem-solving and global industry knowledge.

Curtin Global Future Leader Scholarship provides eligible students a one-off credit of AUD$12,500 against the tuition fee of the course they are undertaking.
